Have you ever noticed how cocky someone can be when they've got nothing to lose?  Picture it:  you're about to take an exam for a course you barely remember taking and you don't have a hope in passing.  Maybe you could impress the prof with some witty jokes on the exam?  After all, you've got nothing to lose!
